Song Utilitarian Porcelain

“Utilitarian” places use at the center of our encounter with porcelain. Vessels for holding and pouring, implements for incense, and objects for the scholar’s desk and leisure bring ceramics into the rhythms of daily life. Centered on Song porcelain, this exhibition asks how practical needs shape form, and how glaze, decoration, and craftsmanship turn familiar objects into works of art. The title invites us to appreciate both what these objects do and the beauty they bring to living.

Item 1781, the Song dynasty Cizhou ware green-glazed oil lamp and candlestick with two ram’s heads, offers one example. The ingenuity of this vessel lies in its dual function: it can serve both as a candlestick and as an oil lamp. The conical base lends the vessel a sense of stability while providing greater capacity for fuel oil. Two loop handles at the rim allow it to be placed on a surface or suspended. Beauty of form and practical ingenuity come together in this thoughtfully conceived design.
