Tags: Animal

Item No.: 1001

Name: A small iron-red and gilt bowl with dragon and phoenix decoration
Period: Qing dynasty, Daoguang reign
Base diameter: 6.5 cm

Made during the Daoguang reign in the mid-nineteenth century, this bowl depicts a lively dragon and phoenix in iron-red enamel and gold. The relatively cursory mark suggests production at a non-imperial kiln. Its fluent brushwork and bright colors suggest that it may have been commissioned for a wedding celebration.
