Name: A large hexagonal wucai gourd-shaped vase with phoenixes calling in harmony
Period: Qing dynasty, Kangxi reign
Height: 41.0 cm

The Yiji chapter of the Book of Documents describes phoenixes arriving in response to the performance of the Shao music. Phoenix imagery occurs frequently on Kangxi porcelain as a sign of auspicious rule and peace. The Chinese commentary interprets this imposing vase in the context of a longing for stability after the warfare and violence of the late Ming period.

At the center, a brilliantly colored, three-tailed male phoenix stretches its neck to call. A similarly radiant female beside peonies turns back and answers. The exchange suggests harmony between husband and wife. The commentary also extends the image to the relationship between ruler and ministers: respectful government, loyal service, and the allegiance of the people.
