Item No.: 1605
Name: A small Cizhou ware bowl with painted peonies
Period: Song dynasty
Rim diameter: 12.0 cm
Painted peonies bring floral imagery to the surface of this small bowl. In contrast to carved decoration, painting invites attention to the movement and changes of direction in the drawn lines. The relationship between the bowl’s modest scale and its ornament makes a simple receptacle a setting for the close appreciation of pattern and craftsmanship.
